UNusual Update
July 28, 2008
Greetings all you UNusual folks,
"Man it's hot. It's like Africa hot. Tarzan couldn't take this kind of hot. "
It's summertime in Kansas City. Enjoy it while it lasts. A few short months from now we'll be freezing our tails off again, dreaming of live music outdoors. Saturdays on Dick's big hard deck have been steadily growing. I'm not as outwardly expressive as Penelope is, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank not only Dick, Sandy, and the rest of the staff at Blayney's, but all of the talented musicians that choose to come and spend Saturday afternoons with us on the deck. We couldn't do it without you. And a special thank you to all the friends and fans, new and old, that stop by to have a cold one and enjoy our little part of one of the best, and under-recognized, cities in the world for live music.
The internet has made the world smaller in a lot of ways. I am in regular contact with sax players around the world, and I can tell you that what we have in KC is special. We are accustomed to being able to go find live music any day of the week. It is not like that in very many places. And not just any ol' live music, but some of the highest quality live music anywhere. KC takes a back seat to nobody in this regard. It's time we pat ourselves on the back a little. Nobody else is going to do it for us.
In addition to our Saturday jams at Blayney's, Penelope and the UNusual Suspects are pleased to announce that Monday night jams are back! Beginning in August we will be hosting the jam at Marty's Blues Cafe in Merriam every Monday night. We've enjoyed success with Monday's in the past and are really looking forward to beating down Monday blahs with some Monday blues.
The Suspects hit the road again in August. We will be taking part in the Rollin' on the River Festival in Keokuk, Iowa on the 15th. We'll be hanging around on the 16th to see our friends TUF and check out CJ Chenier. Should be fun. Closer to home, on the 22nd we'll be headed to Penelope's home town of Harrisonville, MO for the Burndt District BBQ and Blues Festival. Come check us out if you can, and snag some BBQ while you are there.
Other gigs to look out for include last Friday of the month at the Oak Tree, and August 30th at the Brass Rail. If you haven't caught us at the Oak Tree yet, you're missing out. We had a blast up there last month, and are looking forward to another evening with "Pickles" & Company in August. The Brass Rail is undergoing some reorganization, so if you like good food, billiards, and live music up North, be sure to come support us on the 30th. We'll need a good crowd to convince those folks to keep the live music going.
Keep cool,
Sasquatch
