UNusual Update
November 17, 2008
Greetings all you UNusual folks,
They say death and taxes are the only things on which you can rely. I respectfully suggest that change be added to that list. Change is all around, except for in my pocket as luck would have it. Change our President, the weather, the locks, the scoreboard, the menu, our drummer, and our keyboardist. Wait, what?
Jerry Pollock and Leslie Maclean have had business pick up with their jazz trio, so while we will miss them on the bandstand we are also happy for the success they are enjoying and wish them all the best. Check them out on the web at http://www.lesliemacleantrio.com/ to see where they will be performing next. Hopefully they will find time to drop in and play along with us once in a while. With that in mind, The UNusual Suspects are pleased to introduce two new pieces to our puzzle.
DJ Lawrence joins us on drums. DJ has had experience playing with a variety of groups in the area. I'm uncertain what kind of groups they were, (polka, klezmer, zydeco, death-metal?) but at least I can say they were various. He also happens to be related to our "chick singer" (can you say ne-po-tism). Justin has already given him the nickname "Hot Sauce", and he continues to grin patiently when we tell him the drummer is responsible for providing the band van and trailer. William "Sweet-trippin'-cool-breeze-chilly-willy" Simmons brings years of experience playing keyboards with bands I have actually heard of to the table. Willy and I played together in Cotton Candy and So Many Men for several years, and he currently also plays with our friend Scotty Dennis of Scotty and the Soultones. We are expecting great things from these two, and hope that one of them remembers to bring beer to band practice.
Looking at the calendar I see that it is also the time of year when many of us take a chance to reflect on those things we are thankful for. Family, friends, our servicemen and women, fire and police public servants, regular trash pickup, the end of political advertising, a fork and spoon on Thanksgiving, are all on the short list of things for which I am thankful. May we all enjoy a joy filled and peaceful Holiday Season.

We had a blast at the Rollin' on the River festival in Keokuk, IA. Check out this review at Juke Joint Soul.
